The Brand Story
Origins
IKEA's story is a testament to the power of a simple idea executed brilliantly. In 1943, a 17-year-old Swedish farm boy named Ingvar Kamprad founded a small mail-order business selling pens, wallets, and picture frames. He named it IKEA — an acronym of his initials (I.K.), his family farm (Elmtaryd), and his home village (Agunnaryd). Five years later, he added furniture to the catalog, and the world would never look at home furnishing the same way again. Kamprad's genius was in recognizing that beautiful, functional furniture didn't have to be expensive.
Growth & Global Expansion
IKEA's flat-pack furniture concept — where customers assemble furniture themselves — was born out of necessity in 1956 when an employee removed a table's legs to fit it in a car. This accidental innovation became IKEA's defining feature, dramatically reducing shipping costs and enabling global expansion. The first IKEA store opened in Älmhult in 1958, and international expansion began in 1963. Today, IKEA operates 460+ stores in 60 countries, with annual revenues exceeding €47 billion, making it the world's largest furniture retailer.
Presence in UAE & GCC
IKEA has been part of the UAE's story since 1991, making it one of the earliest international retail brands to establish a presence in the country. The brand's first UAE store opened in Dubai, and it has since expanded to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah. IKEA UAE stores are among the largest in the world, with the Dubai Festival City store spanning over 50,000 square meters. The brand's affordable, Scandinavian-design furniture has become a staple in UAE homes, from studio apartments to luxury villas.
