The Brand Story
Origins
The story of H&M begins in a small Swedish town in 1947, when a 30-year-old entrepreneur named Erling Persson returned from a trip to the United States inspired by the concept of affordable, ready-to-wear fashion. He opened a women's clothing store called 'Hennes' (meaning 'Hers' in Swedish) in Västerås, Sweden. The concept was revolutionary for post-war Europe: fashionable clothing at prices ordinary people could actually afford. The store was an immediate success, and Persson quickly expanded to Stockholm.
Growth & Global Expansion
In 1968, Persson acquired Mauritz Widforss, a hunting and fishing equipment store, and with it came a men's and children's clothing line. The company was renamed Hennes & Mauritz — H&M — and a global fashion empire was born. H&M went public on the Stockholm Stock Exchange in 1974 and began its international expansion, entering the UK, Germany, and eventually the United States. By the 2000s, H&M had become one of the world's largest fashion retailers with thousands of stores on every continent.
Presence in UAE & GCC
H&M entered the UAE market in 2006, opening its first store in Dubai's Mall of the Emirates. The brand quickly became a staple of UAE shopping culture, offering its signature mix of trend-led fashion at accessible prices. Today, H&M operates over 50 stores across the UAE in major malls including Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Yas Mall, and Marina Mall. The brand also has a strong online presence through its UAE website and app, offering home delivery and click-and-collect services.
Why Shop Here
H&M's enduring appeal lies in its ability to translate high-fashion runway trends into wearable, affordable pieces within weeks. The brand's Conscious Collection — made from sustainable materials — has resonated strongly with UAE shoppers who are increasingly environmentally aware. H&M's frequent sales, loyalty program, and garment recycling initiative (where you can bring old clothes to any store for recycling) make it not just a fashion destination but a values-driven brand.
