Origins
Carrefour — meaning 'crossroads' in French — was born at a literal crossroads in Annecy, France in 1959. Marcel Fournier and Louis Defforey opened the world's first true hypermarket: a massive store combining a supermarket, clothing department, hardware section, and more under one roof. The concept was revolutionary — instead of visiting multiple specialized stores, shoppers could buy everything in one place. The store's opening day was so overwhelming that the founders had to call the police to manage the crowds.

By the 1990s, Carrefour was operating on every continent. Its 1999 merger with Promodès created the world's second-largest retailer.
